Description

Hearths heads come in simple shapes from circle to rectangle to asymmetrical mystery shape. Symmetrical, smooth shapes are common, while shapes with more lumps are rarer. Heads have a texture like a chalkboard, or beach glass.

The facial markings of a hearth are the window to it's soul...literally! When a hearth's head is found it remains dormant, but only when it is carved into does a hearth come alive. These markings allow them to sense their surroundings and form a body. Special corrosive, hearth-friendly paints have also been developed for this purpose. More intricate markings are rare because residents do not want the hearth’s body to form while the markings are unfinished. (You do not want to carve into a hearth’s head after it’s body has formed. This hurts the hearth.) Hearths can take from thirty minutes to a few weeks to form a body. 

Carved markings are commonly found in older hearths, with painted markings being a recent addition. Markings are a single, solid color.
